Land of the Giants. Sequoia National Park, California. US Southwest Trip Day 12 [POL/ENG].

Kiedy opowiadam o podróży po płd-zach. USA, zawsze jednym tchem wymieniam cztery miejsca, które zrobiły na mnie największe wrażenie - Bryce Canyon  (Utah)  , Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon (oba Arizona) i Park Narodowy Sekwoi (Kalifornia). Ten ostatni, w odróżnieniu od trzech pozostałych, to żywe organizmy. Niektóre mają ponad 2000 lat! Zapraszam na wędrówkę po krainie olbrzymów.

When I retell my southwest US trip, I always list the four places that have impressed me the most. They are Bryce Canyon  (Utah)  , Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon  (both Arizona) and Sequoia National Park.  (California)   The former three are rock formations. Sequoias, however, are living organisms. Some of them are 2000 years old! Join me for a trip in the land of the giants.

Zaprojektowałem trasę, która z parkingu przy Centrum Informacyjnym prowadzi przez najbardziej interesujące miejsca parku. Trasa jest autorską kombinacją istniejących szlaków oraz leśnych ścieżek i jednej drogi asfaltowej. Zobaczyliśmy m.in. drzewa General Sherman, Congress, Tunnel Log oraz weszliśmy na Moro Rock.

I had designed my own route, which led from the Visitor's Center to the most interesting points of Seqouia National Park. My trail included, among others, General Sherman, Congress, Tunnel Log trees and climb lonely Moro Rock.

Wystarczyło zaparkować i zrobić parę kroków by zorientować się co nas czeka. Sekwoje to drzewa tak ogromne, że przerastają wyobraźnię i możliwość opisania. Przy gigantycznych sekwojach, 'normalne' drzewa, takie jak jodły i świerki, wydawały się cienkimi zapałkami. A my staliśmy się Guliwerami w krainie olbrzymów.

We had no sooner parked and walked several steps than we grasped what was ahead. Sequoias are so gigantic that they overgrow my imagination and my abilities to write about them. 'Normal sized' trees such as firs and spruces looked like matches when compared to sequoias. We immediately felt like Guliver in the land of the giants.

Wiedzieliśmy, że główną atrakcją będzie Generał Sherman, największe na świecie drzewo pod względem objętości masy drzewnej. Ale już pierwsze napotkane sekwoje zrobiły na nas takie wrażenie, że gdy dotarliśmy do Shermana, nasza reakcja była na poziomie "ok, kolejne duże drzewo...".

We had expected that General Sherman, the biggest tree in the world by wood volume, would make us bow in awe. But just a few sequoias near the Visitor's Center impressed us so much, that when we reached General Sherman, we were like "ok, yet another big tree...".

Sekwoje są niezwykłe. Nie dość, że są bardzo wysokie i grube, to żyją ponad 2000 lat. Na dodatek mają 'super moc' - potrafią przetrwać pożary. Niektóre drzewa były przepalone na wylot, a mimo to dalej żyły.

Sequoias are amazing. They are not only enormously high and thick. They live more than 2000 years and a have a 'super power' - they can survive a fire and thrive.

Największe drzewo na świecie pod względem objętości masy drzewnej to Generał Sherman. Drzewo ma 90m wysokości i średnicę 11m u podstawy. Mój duży pokój dzienny, w którym piszę ten blog, ma długość trochę ponad 5m. Gdyby General Sherman wyrósł w moim mieszkaniu, nie miałbym gdzie żyć...

The largest tree on Earth, by volume and mass, is General Sherman. It is 90m high and its circumference at the base is 11m. My living room's longer side is 5m. If General Sherman grew in my apartment, there would be no place for me...

Generał Sherman oczywiście robi wrażenie. Ale to tylko jedno z wielu drzew w tym parku. Jest największe, ale nie wyróżnia się bardzo z tłumu innych. I chyba właśnie ten fakt sprawia, że Sequoia National Park to takie niezwykłe miejsce.

General Sherman is impressive, of course. However, it's just one of many big trees in the park. It is the largest, but doesn't really stand out from others. I think that this fact makes Sequoia National Park so special.

Zaprojektowałem szlak, tak aby oprócz Generała Shermana zobaczyć inne nazwane sekwoje - np. "Kongres". To wyjątkowe miejsca, gdzie sekwoje rosną w rodzinnej grupie. Pamiętajmy jednak, że oprócz tych nazwanych, w parku rosną tysiące anonimowych. Poświęć chwilę na kontemplację tych majestatycznych drzew. Mój opis jest zbędny.

I had designed our trail so that we would check by most named sequoias, such as the Congress. They are unique groupings of sequoias. Remember, however, że besides few named trees, there are thousands anonymous sequoias. Please take a moment to appreciate those majestic tress. My words here are very unnecessary.

W Parku Narodowym Sekwoi jest kilka dróg asfaltowych, które pozwalają na zwiedzanie samochodem. My wolimy na piechotę, ale jest miejsce, gdzie wychodzimy na asfalt. To "Tunnel Log" - sekwoja, która padła w 1937r a w jej pniu wydrążono tunel dla samochodów.

There are several paved roads in Sequoia National Park. It is possible to see the giants without getting out of your car. We obviously prefer hiking on foot, but there's one place where we need to emerge from the woods. It's Tunnel Log - a sequoia that fell in 1937 and a 'tunnel' has been cut for cars. 

Samochody na zdjęciach to konkretne SUVy, np. Jeep Cherokee powyżej i Chrysler Pacifica poniżej (chyba, nie jestem specjalistą od amerykańskich aut). A jednak z łatwością przejeżdżają drzewnym tunelem.

The cars pictured above and below are full-sized SUVs - Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler Pacifica (correct me if I am wrong, as I am no expert on American vehicles). Both easily fit into the tunnel.

Dla urozmaicenia wędrówki, dodałem do trasy Moro Rock - ogromny kawał granitu wystający z lasu. Nie jest to najwyższy szczyt w okolicy, ale imponuje nagimi, stromymi zboczami. Jak na niego wejść?

To diversify our hike, I had added Moro Rock to the route. It is a gigantic piece of granite, standing out of an evergreen forest. It is not the highest peak in the vicinity, but it is impressive with its sheer bare rock slopes. How to climb it? 

Na Moro Rock wchodzimy po amerykańsku. W litym granicie wykuto 385 schodów. Równiutkie, zabezpieczone barierką, z miejscami do odpoczynku i podziwiania widoków.

We climb Moro Rock the American way. There are 385 steps cut in granite. The steps are even and secured with a guardrail, complete with flat places to catch breath and appreciate the views.

Cały dzień chodziliśmy w lesie i nie mieliśmy żadnych dalekich widoków. Dopiero pod koniec dnia, na Moro Rock, mogliśmy zobaczyć panoramę gór Sierra Nevada (czyli Gór Śnieżnych).

We had hiked the whole day in a forest, without any far away views. It was only towards the end of the day, when we climbed Moro Rock, when we saw a panorama of Sierra Nevada (trans. Snowy Mountains).

Do samochodu wróciliśmy zachwyceniu rozmachem natury w Parku Narodowym Sekwoi. To jest miejsce, które zdecydowanie trzeba odwiedzić, jeśli planujemy podróż po zachodnich stanach USA.

We returned to our car awed by the majesty of nature in Sequoia National Park. This place is a must see, if you plan a visit to southwestern USA.
